Whatcom Community Foundation in Birch Bay
Did You Know?
For generations, Indigenous Coast Salish peoples—including the Semiahmoo, Lummi, and Nooksack tribes—used Birch Bay for its abundant marine resources; they called the area “Tsan-wuch” (Semiahmoo) and “Say-wak” (Lummi/Nooksack).
Birch Bay is a crescent-shaped “headland bay”, formed as waves bend around headlands (Birch Point to the north, Point Whitehorn to the south).
Birch Bay State Park spans 194 acres with 8,000+ feet of saltwater shoreline and freshwater access along Terrell Creek; its rare saltwater–freshwater estuary supports rich wildlife, and the park is a popular spot for camping, hiking, boating, clamming and more.
