Whatcom Community Foundation in Blaine
Did You Know?
Blaine was once home to the world’s largest salmon cannery, operated by the Alaska Packers’ Association. Today, the historic cannery site has been transformed into the Semiahmoo Resort, a scenic waterfront destination.
Blaine was a pioneer in electricity, installing its first streetlight system around the time of its incorporation and, by 1907, generating its own power with steam engines and generators.
Blaine, “Where America Begins,” sits on the US – Canada border, about 35 miles south of Vancouver, B.C. It is home to the 67-foot Peace Arch and two major border crossings: Peace Arch Crossing for passenger vehicles and Pacific Crossing for commercial trucks.
